A BRIEF HISTORY

 

Lucas' Papaw Ointment was first formulated by Dr. Thomas P. Lucas, M.R.C.S., England; L.R.C.P., Edin.; Lic. Mid., Edin.; Lic. Soc. Apoth., Lond.; Late fellow Med. Soc., London; Memb. British Med. Assoc.; Fel.Lin.Soc., N.S.W.; Fel. Roy. Sac., Queensland; Fel. Entom., London; Royal Society's Club. Land.; Fel. Entomological Soc., U.S. America.
His butterfly collection now resides in the Adelaide Museum.

As far back as 1875 Dr.Lucas was a contributor to The British Medical Journal London.
A testimony to Papaw was written in 1910 by the Great Ormond St. Hospital London.

Dr. Thomas P. Lucas, as his degrees, diplomas, and honours will indicate, was among the leading medical men of his day and one who combined with his medical training a profound knowledge of Natural History and Botany.

Being first and foremost a medical practitioner, it was inevitable that his Botanical Research Work should be studied from a healing point of view, with the possibility of its application to Modern Medicine and, as a consequence, its benefits to humanity.

Of the tens of thousands of specimens which passed through his hands, that which commanded his closest attention and to which he devoted special study was the PAPAW TREE.

For some years Dr.Lucas practised in London. Seeking a warmer climate - he came to Australia in 1876 - practiced in Melbourne for 10 years before moving to Queensland - It was here in Queensland - looking for a natural remedy for disease - he carried out his scientific studies and experiments which led to his formulation of Papaw Ointment.

His investigations led him to believe that he had discovered (in his words) the world's greatest healing agent, and he decided to devote his researches to its application in his profession.

With this end in view he opened a special Hospital – "VERA" – in Brisbane in which his patients were treated solely by his Papaw remedies, and many surprising cases were recorded. Cases of disease which had till then been deemed incurable yield to this latest treatment.

On his death he left to his widow (who for many years had been actively engaged with him in his hospital work) the complete formulae of his preparations and all directions for compounding them, and to this work Mrs. Lucas for many years gave active and devoted attention.

It was impossible, after the death of Dr. Lucas to carry on the overwhelming work that the hospital entailed, but it was possible to make available for the public benefit the remedies which were used therein.

These remedies were passed down to his descendants who still manufacture the product to the same formula today as Dr.Lucas prepared it in his lifetime.

Lucas Papaw Ointment is a drawing and healing ointment, it is also antimicrobial and can be used on minor open cuts and grazes.

Lucas Papaw Ointment may be used for temporary relief of the symptoms of dermatitis and eczema.
